Granite Ledge Kennels is a professional hunting dog training facility just outside Milaca, MN — built by one trainer’s lifelong interest in gun dogs, and grown into a working operation for training, tracking, and breeding.
01 — Our Story
It started with a dog from Grandpa
As an avid hunter, owner Chris Wilson has always had a great interest in hunting dogs — a passion that dates back to the first dog his grandfather gave him. That early interest led to a full-time professional career as a gun dog trainer, and over the years Chris has trained and qualified numerous dogs through their NAVHDA Master Hunter titles.
What hasn’t changed
Chris’s focus as a trainer has never wavered: give the owner a dog that’s a pleasure to have both in the field and in the home. That means training retrievers, upland dogs, and versatile hunting breeds with equal attention to obedience and to the natural drive that makes a hunting dog worth having in the first place.
A new specialty, same fundamentals
More recently, that philosophy extended into training dogs to track and recover wounded deer by scent. It’s a natural fit — the discipline, nose work, and handler communication that make a great blood trail dog are the same fundamentals we’ve been building into gun dogs for two decades.
02 — The Facility
180 acres, built for one dog at a time
Every acre here has a purpose — ponds for water work, native grasses and timber for upland and tracking work, and kennel space designed around a dog’s comfort as much as its training schedule.
Diverse Training Grounds
Ponds, native grasses, and timber give us the range of terrain needed for retriever work, upland hunting, versatile pointing and retrieving, and blood trail recovery — without leaving the property.
Heated & Cooled Kennels
Large indoor runs keep dogs comfortable through Minnesota’s full range of weather, with a fenced exercise yard for room to move between sessions.
One-on-One Attention
The trainer gives total concentration to the dog in front of him — an environment built for focus, not a kennel cycling dogs through a generic program.
03 — Our Philosophy
A trained dog should still love the work
It’s easy to train obedience into a dog and train the joy right out of it. We don’t. Whether we’re steadying a retriever to shot, developing a young Pudelpointer’s point, or building a blood trail dog’s confidence on an aged track, the goal is a dog that stays enthusiastic about the job.
Before your dog goes home, you’ll get individual instruction on the training techniques we used, so the transition back to your handling is seamless and the work holds up.
04 — Before You Visit
What to have ready when you drop off your dog
Required for boarding & training
- Current shot record, with Bordetella vaccination up to date
- Your dog’s age and any prior training or hunt test experience
If you’re calling about a blood trail recovery
- Reach out as soon as possible — scent quality drops the longer a trail sits
- Know your general location and roughly how long ago the shot was taken
Every training program includes boarding at no separate charge. Before your dog goes home, Chris walks you through the techniques used so the training holds up under your own handling.

From owners, before their first visit
Do I need an appointment to tour the facility?
Yes — call or email ahead so Chris can set aside time to walk you through the grounds and talk through your dog’s training goals without rushing.
What breeds do you train, beyond Pudelpointers?
We train retrievers, upland breeds, and versatile hunting dogs generally — Pudelpointers are our own breeding focus, but the training programs serve any gun dog breed.
How far out do I need to book?
Training openings and Pudelpointer litters are limited, so it’s worth reaching out early, especially heading into hunting season.
